The mediaeval centre is one of the most beautiful that Spain has to offer. Most of the culture and leisure facilities are located here. Long promenades along the harbour, boulevards in the centre including Jaume III and numerous little streets with fine medieval houses are an invitation to stroll. Numerous tapas bars, restaurants and street cafes offer typical Mallorcan, Spanish and international cuisine.
Powerful historical buildings including the cathedral with the widest nave in the world add to the stately character of the town, as well as the former fish market of "Sa Llotja" (1451) and the "Castillo Bellver" castle, an imposing round building from the 13th century with a beautiful view over Palma.
The most popular festivals are during Epiphany on the 5/6th January, the fiesta celebrating the patron saint of the city, "San Sebatsiŕ", carnival in February and the procession of the penitents at Easter.
